Types of Cannabis Oil – Which oils are there and what are the differences?

Because cannabis oil is gaining huge popularity in users with both recreational as with other demands, ever more types of oil are coming on the market which all carry different names. These names are sometimes also erroneously attributed to other products which means people can no longer see the forest for the trees and are no longer able to tell the difference between the types of oil. On this page we explain the differences between the types of cannabis oil from the basics, in order for you to be able to easily distinguish them from each other in future.

Cannabis plants (Cannabis sativa L.) are roughly subdivided into two species of plants, the psychoactive and the nonpsychoactive plants. The psychoactive strains, which can make you high and stoned, are called drug strains and are known as weed or marijuana. The nonpsychoactive strains are called hemp. The psychoactivity of the plant is determined by the presence of THC. All strains containing less than 0.2% of THC are classified as hemp, all other strains as weed. This means hemp contains barely any THC, but it is however known for the higher production of CBD.

Cannabissoort Psychoactiviteit

Most active ingredient

When weed is extracted you end up with weed oil and when hemp is extracted you get hemp oil. The oil obtained after the extraction, is also called an extract or concentrate. Because the classification of the type of oil depends on the presence of the most active and also most important ingredient, weed oil is often also called THC oil. And likewise hemp oil in which cannabidiol is dominant, is often called CBD oil. When the cannabinoid CBDA however is more prevalent in hemp oil, it is called CBDA oil and when that is the case with CBG, the hemp oil is called CBG oil.

When choosing a suitable cannabis oil it is therefore important to know from which strain of cannabis plant it is obtained and in what percentages the cannabinoids are present. If the oil comes from a weed plant in which high concentrations of THC occur, there is a chance that you can get stoned or high from it. This means weed oil needs to be dosed extremely accurately and especially with children and animals due caution needs to be observed..

Trichomen op Hennep

Trichomes on a hemp plant – Richly filled with cannabinoids and terpenes!

Parts of the cannabis plant utilised

The most important ingredients, like the cannabinoids and terpenes, are produced in the sticky trichomes (resin glands) of the cannabis plant. These trichomes are mainly found on the calyxes and bracts of the plant. The further away the leaves are from the flowers, often the less trichomes are found on them. This means the buds of the plants are the most potent. When an extract is made from the leaves exclusively, there will therefore be a need for a larger amount of plant material.

Besides the flowers and leaves of both the hemp plant as well as the weed plant, hemp seeds, which are produced in the fertilised flowers of female (dioecious) and monoecious hemp plants, can also be used to obtain oil. This is however a completely different oil with completely different characteristics. Despite that the calyx (the seed husk or the sepal in which the seeds are produced) abundantly features glistening trichomes, the seeds themselves contains practically no cannabinoids. Oil obtained from hemp seeds, is called hempseed oil and can definitely not be compared to a CBD-rich oil from hemp flowers or hemp leaves.

Three types of oil from cannabis plants

As the chart above shows, briefly stated there are three types of oil that can be obtained from cannabis plants. Weed oil is obtained from weed plants, hemp oil from hemp plants and hempseed oil from hemp seeds. These oils can also carry different names, like THC oil instead of weed oil and CBD oil instead of hemp oil. In addition these oils can also be subdivided further into all kinds of extracts with different names yet again.

To provide clarity into the different types of cannabis oil, a transparant summary is shown below. Take note, this information is not official and you might regularly find different names also used for other, mislabeled oils. When purchasing cannabis oil it is therefore important to gain clear information about the provenance of the plant materail used, in order to be sure of which type of oil is on offer.

Olie uit Hennepzaad

Hemp seeds are produced in the fertilised flowers of female and monoecious hemp plants

1. Hempseed oil / HZO

Hempseed oil, or HZO for short (from the Dutch HennepZaadOlie), is pressed from the seeds which are produced in the pollinated flowers of female (dioecious) or monoecious hemp plants. Monoecious hemp, also sometimes called hermaphroditic, is made up of plants on which both types of unisexual flowers are formed. HZO is chock-full of beneficial ingredients and is enormously healthy for our bodies. But due to the limited amount of cannabinoids or the complete lack thereof, hempseed oil lacks the very unique properties, because of which those components are so very

popular.

So hempseed oil, as described above, is exclusively obtained from the seeds of the plant. These are carefully pressed for the oil-like substance to be won from them. Products based on this seed oil contain all kinds of beneficial substances and promote general health. But, as already mentioned, it does not contain enough THC or CBD to be able to experience any effects of these. Because of the beneficial properties this oil is frequently used as dilution or thinning agent in a CBD extract.

Hempseed oil is also used as a healthy addition to food, in salads or in smoothies. This practical seed oil is also frequently applied in cosmetics and you can use it to enrich bathwater which will make skin feel silky smooth again. Depending on how HZO is prepared it can be subdivided once more into refined and unrefined cold-pressed hempseed oil. There is also a choice of organic HZO, because despite the fact that all hemp plants are cultivated organically, a product only gets an organic certificate if the plants are grown on unpolluted soil.

Previously hempseed oil was regularly also called hemp oil, but due to the confusion which has arisen with the CBD-rich hemp oil, the name is nowadays considered incorrect. Then there is hempseed oil+ as well. This is regular HZO to which a small amount of CBD and/or THC oil has been added. Hempseed oil+ can be used in the same manner as regular seed oil.

Cannabinoiden in Trichomen van Hennep

Cannabinoids are produced in the trichomes of hemp

2. Hemp oil

The name hemp oil is frequently applied and because hemp and weed are often confused, this oil is sometimes incorrectly called weed oil. Conversely you can also come across products which have been derived from THC-rich variants, but still given the name hemp oil. This has come about due to the fact that the name hemp in some other countries is also used for weed. On top of that the name hemp is applied in Dutch law and in the media for all plants of the cannabis genus and therefore also for weed plants.

So hemp oil is oil obtained from the flowers and leaves from hemp plants, but not from the seeds. Oil from hemp seeds, as described above, is completely different oil with completely different properties and effects and should therefore not be confused with the CBD-rich oil from the actual plant. Seeds as it happens contain barely any cannabinoids because these are only produced after the seed has grown into a mature plant

Type of Hemp oil: CBD Oil

CBD oil is obtained from hemp plants in which high concentrations of cannabidiol (CBD) are present and rather low concentrations of tetrahydrocannabinol, THC in short. Because the oil comes from nonpsychoactive hemp, it can be purchased legally. Since the whole plant has cannabidiol in certain measures this oil can come from either the leaves, stems or flowers. But, as with the weed plant, the flower buds contain by far the most cannabinoids. Because this oil is extracted from hemp, the name hemp oil also is correct.

Is CBD oil always a hemp oil?

In by far the most cases CBD oil comes from hemp and is therefore a hemp oil. There are however some known exceptions. As it happens ever more weed strains nowadays are developed with both high THC percentages as well as high CBD percentages. There are also a few weed varieties with high CBD percentages, but with a low concentration of THC. All cannabis plants from which the percentage of THC exceeds the 0.2% are classified as weed plants. The oil obtained from these however, is actually CBD dominant and can therefore be called CBD oil. These are exceptions, especially in the Netherlands, which means CBD oil is seen as a true hemp oil.

Types of CBD Oil and Extracts + Types of CBD Products

Types of CBD oils and extracts

CBD oil can exist in various forms. When extracted from the plant, it has a thick, viscous texture by nature. This thick, highly concentrated extract is often also called CBD paste. Because CBD paste is not easily dosable due to its thick consistency, another oil can be added, like for instance olive oil, linseed oil or hempseed oil. The more diluting oil is added, the more liquid the extract becomes.

Because of this the thick CBD extract in undiluted or slightly diluted form is supplied in syringes or jars under the name CBD Paste, while the more diluted extract is supplied in dropper bottles under the name CBD Oil Drops. When the extract is completely purified and cleared of other plant components, by which you single out the CBD, CBD crystals are formed. This CBD in crystal form is supplied in jars under the name CBD Crystals.

Different types of CBD oil can also be created by making use of different extraction methods, as for

instance a CO2 extraction, an alcohol extraction, a maceration or an infusion. Of these extraction methods a CO2 extraction is generally considered as the most safe and at the same time most efficient method for the extraction of botanical substances, including hemp.

When an extract is pure and free from chlorophyll, it can also be used to dab, which means it is also suitable for smoking, vaping or dabbing. Moreover an extract can also be processed in foodwares or skincare products for instance and in all kinds of other products with various ingestion- or dosing possibilities, like capsules, suppositories, sprays and such

Type of Hemp oil: CBDA oil

Just like CBD oil, CBDA oil is obtained from the nonpsychoactive hemp plant. The difference between the two oils has to do with the preparation method. Cannabidiolic acid (CBDA) is the acid precursor of cannabidiol (CBD) and is naturally present in the plant. So when the plant is harvested, it contains mainly acidic cannabinoids. By the applying of heat, and to a lesser extent by light and oxygen, the acid form (CBDA) is converted into the neutral form (CBD). This is called decarboxylation.

Since it has been noted that the acid form also holds a lot of of beneficial properties and can be of as great a value as the neutral form, the aim has been to try to prevent this conversion through special extraction methods with which as less heat as possible is used in order to keep as much CBDA as possible. Because this oil is subjected to little processing and remains as natural as possible, just as it is present in the freshly harvested, untreated plant, CBDA oil is sometimes also called Raw oil. CBDA oil can come in both paste form as in oil form, just like CBD oil.

Type of Hemp oil: CBG oil CBG oil, or cannabigerol oil in full, is a hemp oil in which the cannabinoid cannabigerol (CBG) is the component of which more is present. Because each cannabinoid possesses certain unique properties, it can be important to use an oil in which a different component is present in bigger quantity, as in this instance the cannabinoid cannabigerol. In our Cibiday CBG oil not only cannabigerol is present in high concentrations however. Cannabidiol (CBD) is also abundantly represented, which means both highly important phytocannabinoids are present in it.

3. Weed oil /THC oil

Weed oil is obtained from cannabis strains in which THC-concentrations are found that are higher than the legally permitted 0.2%. These plants are also known as marijuana- or weed plants. Since there is a big difference between hemp and weed and weed has other properties and on top of that is much more expensive than hemp, the oil obtained from THC-poor hemp strains cannot of course be called weed oil. Unfortunately much confusion has arisen over this and is sometimes even unfairly taken advantage of.

Because both hemp oil as well as hempseed oil are regularly called weed oil, it can occur that people are under the assumption that they have purchased the right oil, while the properties can hugely differ. In severe cases prices are asked for hempseed oil which are on the same level with the price of weed oil.

Weed oil is oil obtained from the leaves, buds and stems of weed plants or from weed buds you can

buy in the coffeeshop. Just as with hemp plants, the buds of the plant hold the most cannabinoids. Weed oil contains high concentrations of tetrahydrocannabinol and can cause psychoactive effects. The dosage therefore needs to be steadily increased with great care. Besides because of the high THC-level weed oil is not legal

Distinction between weed oil usage for health or recreational reasons

Weed oil is consumed by users who use weed for health reasons (supplied through a doctor's prescription in the Netherlands), as well as by recreational users. Weed oil for health reasons is applied sublingually in most cases by far. This means the extract is administered under the tongue. In recreational usage in many cases the extract is smoked or vaporised with the help of special attributes which are suitable for the use of concentrates.

A concentrate which is going to be used recreationally needs to be extracted as purely as possible, so it is free of substances like chlorophyll, also known as the green pigment of the plant, which makes for a bitter taste. The extracts are also not diluted with oils like olive oil or hempseed oil. As after all these diluting oils are not suitable for smoking and might therefore be hazardous to your health.

Is THC oil always a weed oil?

Contrary to CBD oil, which in exceptional cases can also come from CBD-dominant weed plants (meaning not just from hemp plants), THC oil comes exclusively from weed plants and therefore is always a weed oil. This because hemp contains insufficient THC to obtain an effective THC oil from it.

What is THCA oil?

THCA oil is an oil which comes from weed plants in which the acid precursor of THC, known as the nonpsychoactive cannabinoid THCA, has not been converted by decarboxylation. Meaning THCA oil does come from weed plants, but does not have a psychoactive impact. Over time, or in bad storage conditions, THCA oil will also be able to give a psychoactive effect, since due to the influence of heat, air and oxygen the acid cannabinoid is ultimately converted to the neutral cannabinoid THC.

Types of weed oil: Concentrates and isolates

Weed oil, hash, wax and all other products from the list below are all concentrates which are obtained from the psychoactive weed plant. When these concentrates are filtered even further, pure cannabinoid concentrates are created, like isolates, distillates and crystals. Since recreational use of THC-rich cannabis (weed) has been popular for a lot longer than the use of THC-poor cannabis (hemp), many names are known of various types of concentrates from weed.

The different names are often related to the methods of extraction used, the structure of the concentrate and the starting material used. So extracts can for instance be obtained from dried weed

or from fresh, frozen weed (live resin), but also from for instance flower buds (nug run) or trimmings (trim run). Also sometimes different names are given to the same concentrate, like for example weed oil and THC oil or kief and skuff. Most of the concentrates below are especially popular amongst the cannabis users in the United States and Canada

For consumers it is not important to be able to distinguish between all these different concentrates. In the Netherlands the names from the first column are mainly used. It is however important to know that these concentrates all possess a high percentage of THC, which means a psychoactive effect can occur after usage.

With the name cannabis oil you need to take care. Officially this can also be oil which comes from hemp. In many cases however the THC-rich variant is meant by this. Of course it is also possible to obtain the concentrates listed above from hemp plants. Like for instance CBD dabs, ISO or CO2 oil, but because of the rich concentrations of THC and the major popularity amongst the recreational users, the weed plant has the largest preference in most cases. On the page Cannabis Concentrates all these types of extracts are further explained.

Cannabis oil from the pharmacy

In the Netherlands it is also possible to get cannabis oil through the pharmacy. These oils, with the names Bedica, Bedrocan, Bediol and Bedrolite, are diluted with arachis oil (peanut oil) and are made from various types of pharmaceutical cannabis, which are required to meet strict regulations. One of the safety requirements is that the products need to be irradiated with gamma rays in order to eliminate any micro-organisms possibly present, like bacteria, fungi and yeasts.

Many experts worldwide however are of the opinion that gamma irradiated products for the most part lose their unique properties. After analysis it has been detected that changes occur after irradiation in the present terpenes, important ingredients as well. Especially the acyclic monoterpenes, like myrcene and limonene, are very sensitive to irradiation.

Despite the fact that the cannabinoids CBD and THC remain intact, irradiation remains a somewhat controversial technique for the decontamination of cannabis oil from the pharmacy. One of the major concerns with the irradiation treatment is the formation of radiolytic compounds, in particular the 2-alkylcyclobutanones (2-ACB). These newly formed chemical substances can have a possible carcinogenic effect on rats according to research.
